Frequently Asked Questions
Is online therapy just as effective as in person?
I have been working online with clients since 2016, and I do believe that for most people online therapy can be just as effective as coming in person. As long as you have privacy and good internet, it can be a very convenient way to meet to accommodate busy schedules. There may be some instances where in person might be a better fit; but this usually comes down to personal preference or a clinical recommendation. Many clients have shared that being in their own space actually helps them feel more at home and have an easier time opening up. Still others comment that they prefer to leave their home or workspace so that it can be a totally separate experience. And some prefer a hybrid.
Do you offer online therapy in Winston-Salem, NC?
Yes, I offer online therapy in Winston-Salem, NC and throughout the state of North Carolina. I also offer online therapy in Denver, Colorado, and throughout the states of Colorado and Florida. I offer in person therapy in my office in downtown Winston-Salem.
What's the difference between Therapy and coaching?
Therapy often explores past experiences, emotional wounds, trauma, and patterns that impact mental health and relationships. Therapy is a clinical service that may include diagnosis and treatment of mental health conditions. Clinicians much be licensed in the same state that they are providing therapy.
Coaching is non clinical and focuses on growth and forward movement. It supports clients in clarifying values and goals, strengthening self-trust, and taking aligned action in the present and future. Although it's possible to include coaching goals into therapy, coaching does not diagnose or treat mental health conditions and is not a substitute for therapy. It is unregulated in most states and does not require a license to practice. It is also not a service that is covered by insurance.
Both can be deeply supportive—they simply serve different purposes. Clients who are actively experiencing significant mental health distress or who are seeking clinical diagnosis or treatment are encouraged to work with a licensed therapist alongside or instead of coaching.
If you are curious about coaching, we can talk more about your goals and needs and determine together what would be best. I have a separate coaching business where I can see anyone in the world.

Do I have to talk about childhood in therapy?
You don't HAVE to do anything in particular in order for therapy to be effective except being willing to vulnerable and open to change and growth. As a family and couples therapist, I do feel like it's important for me to understand the environment you grew up and the systems that you were and are still a part of that could be impacting the present. The reason for this is because it can sometimes give you insight and understanding into your own patterns, perspective, health, and behavior. This insight and understanding can sometimes make it easier to facilitate change. I always meet clients where they are at and go at a pace that feels comfortable to them. You are always in the driver's seat and in charge of your own treatment. I'm very collaborative in my approach, and I see myself merely as a guide and consultant, rather than an expert in your own life.
